Week 13 Nutritious Books

Here is my selection of books that "feed" the young adults mind and soul.

Homecoming

Cynthia Voigt

Thirteen-year-old Dicey becomes responsible for her three younger siblings since they’ve been abandoned by their mother, therefore the four of them decide to journey across various states to find a family member who will welcome them into their home.

I found this book in the middle school library.

I read Gary Salvner’s piece on Time and Tradition Transforming the Secondary English Class with Young Adult Novels and he mentioned this book. Therefore I wanted to check it out, since I was not familiar with the title.

The Book Thief

Markus Zusak

Nine-year-old Liesel is a foster child living in Germany during World War II. Liesel finds herself stealing her first book during her younger brothers funeral. Finding it difficult to resist stealing she soon shares her books with her neighbors and friends during these difficult times.

I found this book in the high school library.

A classmate mentioned that this book would be a great book for historical fiction. This caught my attention; therefore I sought out the title.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Sherman Alexie

Junior grew up on a Spokane Indian reservation, and decides he would like to leave the reservation in order to receive a good education at a nearby all white school.

I found this book in the high school library.

Another book that was recommended by a classmate, and I found the title capturing. I knew I wanted to take a look!
