Week 12 Scary Books

Here is my selection of scary books. You'll notice I tended to favorite short stories.

Dare to Be Scared

Robert D.San Souci

The book consists of thirteen scary original tales that focus on ghosts, the supernatural, science fiction and fantasy.

I found this book at the local middle school

I chose this book because I liked how it gave a variety of short stories for students to encounter.

Raven’s Gate: Book One Of The Gatekeeper

Anthony Horowitz

Matt a 14 year-old orphan is associated with a crime, for his punishment he must live with an old woman in a deserted town where strange and dangerous things happen.

I found this book at the local middle school

This book caught my attention not only to be a great thriller but also written by a well-known best selling author.

Restless Dead: Ten Original Stories Of The Supernatural.

Deborah Noyes: Editor

This book features a great collection of horror and thriller short stories from a variety of well-known thriller authors.

I found this book at the local high school

Again I enjoyed the short story collection. This book seems to have it all from vampires to ghosts that it would fit every reader’s scary delight!

Week 11 Sci-Fi and Fantasy

Here are my selections:

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Audrey Niffenegger

Henry DeTamble time travels between the past and the future and discovers his true love Clair who becomes his anchor.

High School Library

I chose this book, as I liked how Niffenegger alternates between Clair and Henry’s point of view. The movie previews also captured my attention.

Pendragon: Book Eight The Pilgrims of Rayne

D.J. MacHale

Bobby Pendragon is a time traveler who goes to different worlds to save the universe.

Middle School Library

The entire series caught my attention in the library. I chose one book to browse. It is interesting how MacHale writes it as a journal from Bobby Pendragon’s point of view to points of view from other characters in the story.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter takes part in the rare Triwizard Tournament where he learns the reason he was placed there was to put the world in danger.

Middle School Library

I chose this book due to its popularity as a book and movie.

Week 10 Romance Books

This week I took a look at YA books on love and relationships. Here are the three I chose to highlight.

Gossip Girl

Cecily Von Ziegesar

Gossip Girl takes a look at New York City’s elite teens that have it all!

I found this book in the High School Library

I chose this book due to its popularity and its risqué look at teens and sex.

Three Junes

Julia Glass

This book takes on the story of the McLeod Family during three separate Junes spanning over ten years.

I found this book in the High School Library

I chose this book because I wanted to include a book that speaks of homosexuality. I wanted to see what the high school library had on the subject and this was the only book.

New Moon

Stephenie Meyer

The saga continues as Bella struggles with losing her beloved Edward.

This is a personal book of mine.

I chose this book due to the high popularity amongst teens and due to the great love interest of Bella and Edward.

Week 9 Funny Books

Here are three funny books that I chose to present.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Author: Jeff Kinney

Summary: Greg Heffley experiences the complicated life of middle school from his search for popularity, to dealing with his nerdy friends and well-meaning parents.

Where I found the book: In the middle school library.

Why I chose it to be highlighted: I liked the actual set up the book, with the illustrations and journal written text. It is pleasurable to read and look at. Very engaging.

Dear Dumb Diary, Am I The Princess or The Frog?

Author: Jim Benton

Summary: Jamie Kelly shares her thoughts and feelings of middle school in her “dumb diary”.

Where I found the book: In the middle school library.

Why I chose it to be highlighted: Comical illustrations and text. The text flows nicely due to the diary type entries.

The Princess Diaries

Author: Meg Cabot

Summary: Mia Thermopolis life goes from average ninth grader to crown princess of Genovia.

Where I found the book: In the middle school library.

Why I chose it to be highlighted: I enjoy Meg Cabot as a writer. This book is entertaining and it highlights what everyone in middle and high school wants: to fit in.
